I, like many, was introduced to the concept of peanut butter whiskey through Screwball. And like many I’m sure, I tried it with an odd grimace expecting to dislike it but actually enjoying it.
I guess mixing two of my favorite things, despite being opposites, turns out to complement each other in a strange yet tasty way. So when Ogden’s Own Distillery Porter’s Whiskeys recently sent me a bottle of their new Porter’s Peanut Butter Whiskey to try I was intrigued. As the spirits industry continues to fragment and grow more niche, it makes sense that such nuanced bottles are becoming more mainstream. Considering how much I enjoyed Screwball, I decided to give the peanut butter version by Porter’s Whiskey a shot.
As the name suggests, Ogden’s Own is based in Ogden Utah and produces a diverse line of spirits including Apple, Huckleberry, and Peach liqueurs. They also offer a Porter’s Whiskey Cola in a can, which is very good. The whiskey is small-batch rye aged in heavy charred, new oak barrels for over three years, combining the smoothness of Canadian whiskey with the unique peanut butter flavor. The label for this whiskey has a peanut butter cup on it, and that’s pretty spot on.
The rich deep peanut butter taste shines here, but the sweetness is not overwhelming. The mouthfeel is very thick and rich. It is an almost syrupy whiskey, but for such rich decadent flavor, it works well. The chocolate is well laced with the Canadian whiskey, making for a deep flavorful drink.
After tasting it and sharing it with friends this fall, the verdict was unanimous that it was preferred over Screwball. Porter makes it clear that it is imitation peanut butter, not real peanut butter, used in this bottle, however, it is still a solid drink around a campfire or to warm you up on a cold winter night.
Recently I took a little flask of this with me ice fishing and it was a big hit. A little hit of peanut butter warms you up when it’s a little chilly out. I keep a bottle on hand in my garage whenever I get a taste for a sweet sip of a peanut butter cup.
This is definitely more of a decadent dessert-style beverage. While you may not want to reach for this for a regular dram when you get a sweet tooth for a sugary whiskey this will deliver every time. The rich thickness likely will be a bit more seasonable, likely to be enjoyed in the fall or winter more, there is nothing that says Porter’s Peanut Butter Whiskey wouldn’t work well for backyard barbeques and tailgating time.
Porter’s Peanut Butter Whiskey is 33.3% ABV. and runs $19.99/750 ml bottle. Check it out here.
The Porter’s Whiskeys are available online via Great American Craft Spirits and Hi-Time Wine as well as select retailers in Utah, Idaho, Michigan, California, and Nevada.
