If you are familiar with New Holland Brewing Company’s legendary Dragon’s Milk Stout then odds are you’re going to want to try Origin – a new small-batch bourbon available year-round.
New Holland Spirits, Michigan’s oldest whiskey distiller, introduced Origin, a straight bourbon whiskey, distilled in small batches and bottled at 95 proof. This release is the first year-round bourbon with a 5-year age in the Dragon’s Milk lineup.
“Origin is one of the most exciting projects we’ve taken on at New Holland,” said Adam Dickerson, Brand Manager at New Holland. “We’ve been sampling this product patiently for five long years and are continually impressed by its complexity of flavor, and delicate finish.”
Origin originates in a nearly 100-year-old prohibition-era pot still that resides at New Holland’s production facility. And its name is an image of the origin story of Dragon’s Milk, which is the bourbon’s parent brand. The original Dragon’s bourbon barrel Milk Stout used bourbon barrels. Those same barrels are now part of New Holland’s Brewery and Distillery.
“Origin’s high-barley mash bill and 5-year maturation in char 3 oak barrels offers the drinker a one-of-a-kind experience,” Dickerson said. “We are particularly enthusiastic about Origin’s four signature tasting notes of stone fruit (namely pear and apricot), citrus, baked pastries, and vanilla wafer. The marriage of these flavors with the myriad of additional sub-flavors forms a truly memorable bourbon and presents you with new tasting notes to uncover each time you revisit.”
According to New Holland, they produce true small-batch bourbon, always bottled at the pinnacle of flavor in batches of 100 barrels or less. Origin is available now at New Holland’s retail locations and in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Colorado, Texas, and California.
Origin sells for $44.99 MSRP. New Holland was kind enough to proved me with a bottle for review.

- Appearance: In the glass, the whiskey has a medium golden copper hue to it. Very nice amber color.
- Aroma: On the nose, I get hints of vanilla, honey, vanilla, straw, and biscuits. Very floral sweet scents overall.
- Taste: The complex tastes evolve and include hints of vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate, nuts, Weather’s original butterscotch, bitters, honey, and a dab of pepper
- Finish: The finish is clean, warm, enveloping the palate, and quite smooth.
- Overall: New Holland Spirits has created a good, unique whiskey that meets the mark for the name. It will be very interesting to see this batch evolve with more time.
